Psychological Factors affecting Driver.
The following are some of the most important Psychological factors that affect the driver.
ANGER: anger is a state when the hormone adrenaline gushes in to the blood and the human being suffers a fit of rage. Anger is the worst state of a human mind and body which manifests itself in most deadly deeds. Driving in fit of anger is a dangerous thing as the driver loses control. He drives at a faster speed.
EMOTIONAL UPSET: if somebody is emotionally upset, he/she must not drive. If it is necessary one should take a short walk or talk to a friend and shed out his feelings. If emotionally upset while driving, the driver gets emotional swings and sometimes gets lost in oblivion, which may further cause accidents on road.
MENTAL FATIGUE: A PERSON WHO HAS WORKED FOR NEARLY A WHOLE DAY UNDER MENTAL STRAIN SHOULD TAKE EXTRA CARE WHILE DRIVING. HE MUST REALAX FOR A WHILE AND THEN SHOULD DRIVE. MENTAL FATIGUE is a state where the transmission of signals from brains to limbs through our motor system becomes invariably slow.
A PERSON UNDER MEDICATION: nowadays some of the medicines with sedatives as one of the constituents. People under such medications are under the influence of these sedatives. This could make you feel sleepy causing danger to people around.

At Sathi Road -Coimbatore
The rider of of this two wheeler went and hit against this autoricksha...to the auto there was just a small dent in the bumber. but for the rider...a head injury and still on treatment... the hospital bill more than Rs 50,000... A helmet would have saved all the problem.

The death that touched me in my thirty six years of life as a Police Officer.

Bajabi Kumar Sharma aged 66 years traveled all the way from Guwahati to Coimbatore to treat his son Sharma aged 44 years at K.M.C. Hospital. They were accompanied by his brother who is a doctor. Mr. Sharma was to undergo a kidney transplant. The surgery was planned on the 4th May 2006. On 3rd evening Bajabi Kumar crossed the road to get some fruit juice for his son. He was knocked down by a two wheeler near ‘Goldwins’ in Avinashi Road. He sustained head injury and he was admitted in the same hospital, but in the neurology ward. The surgery for son Sharma took place the next day. The father Bajabi Kumar succumbed to his injuries on 11-5-06. The son never knew of his father’s accident or death. The money that was brought to take care of Sharma was spent to treat the father. The eight days of treatment costed him considerably. The doctor brother did not have any other relation to take care of the formalities. He approached us, (the police) and we went with all the formalities in no time. He wanted to transport the body to Guwahati on the same day in the late night flight from Bangalore to Guwahati.
The police Surgeon Dr.Edwin Joe embalmed the body and made it transportable in a casket. Help came from all the quarters, from the air-lines, from the doctors of K.M.C Hospital, Police Surgeon and the ambulance driver. Since there was no evening flight to catch up with the Guwahati flight, the ambulance driver assured us that he will transport the doctor brother and the body of Mr.Bajabi Kumar Sharma to Bangalore Airport safely.
When I went home in the evening after finishing all the formalities for Mr.Bajabi Kumar Sharma, I was enveloped in a heavy shroud of numb emptiness. What an irony! The father who came to take treatment for his son went back home dead. At times I feel that these terrible painful events in my life not only give me sorrow and pain but also judge me. I have learnt to understand and love these painful times that I come across in my life often.

Alcohol… The venom of human life.
Most often we read in the newspapers that if alcohol is taken in small quantities it does no harm to the human bodies. In fact some doctors say that one or two drinks a day could benefit the heart, lowering the risk of coronary heart disease. But there are many researchers who do not and are reluctant to accept these findings. More than the good it does, we obviously have to think of the serious damage it does to our vital organs. It is clearly linked to disease such as cirrhosis of the liver and also increase in blood pressure. It is a very important factor in thousands of deaths of road and industrial accidents. It has also a great link with domestic violence, marriage breakdown and child abuse.
Alcohol depresses the central nervous system and there by lowers its activity. The reason why alcohol fuels so many social functions is that it gives a more relaxed attitude and greater confidence. It is a false belief that alcohol improves their efficiency because they believe that they are more confident and there by more competent. But these are just illusory. Just one drink is enough to affect our mental and physical skills particularly those such as driving which needs good coordination and a sharp mind. Alcohol crosses the blood brain barrier system and so it acts quickly. Alcohol is one of those molecules that gain entry into the brain. Probably if it had been a larger molecule it would not enter the brain and relax us and we would not be going behind it.
DON’T DRINK…DRINKING IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH… AND DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE.. Life is precious.

Don’t fall asleep at the wheel.
Mostly the accidents that take place at night are contributed to the fact that the drivers fall asleep while driving. It may not be possible for us to prove this fact. There have been so much of researches being done to elicit the cause. It has been found out that thousands of drivers fall asleep on the wheel. Mostly the vehicle hits a tree or the central barricade or median with no skid marks on the road. Such accidents are very common in straight roads and in good driving conditions. The many unexplained accidents in the highways are due to sleeping drivers.
It is mostly between 4 AM and 6AM that a driver is about to nod off and crash as at any other time of day. Late afternoon is another changing period. Our body clock which controls our body functions, urges us to sleep twice a day- at night and in the afternoon. Most people feel that the desire to nap in the after noon is due to a heavy lunch. (Most drivers prefer to take a very light meal when they go on the roads). But alcohol definitely increases the urge to sleep. Most people take a siesta. Well, it is not indulgence but a very natural response of our body.
The sleep related accidents involves the drivers of lorries, heavy trucks and long distance buses. A driver may have to load his vehicle at night or in the early morning and sets off in to the Highway. He travels through out may be about eight to ten hours or even more. He unloads his load. He might not get just enough time to sleep soundly. Then again he may have to reload his vehicle and set off for the returning journey. He is unable to complete his sleep. In those danger hours of the early morning, he falls asleep at the wheel.
This law does not necessarily control the drivers of the heavy vehicles alone. Any person who drives for too long after too little rest is at risk. Drowsiness sets in mostly at the early wee hours; the driver eventually closes his eyes no matter how much the window is open or how loudly his cassette recorder plays.
Never drive for too long without taking an adequate rest. If possible share the driving. Avoid those danger times especially if you haven’t had a good night’s sleep.

Respected Guest of Honour, chairman, and dear Students of PSG Arts and science college

It gives me great pleasure to come here and I thank the department of corporate secretaryship for having given me this chance to stand before this young generation.
I went through the project report and I am greatly delighted at your sincere effort to analyze the cause of accidents that take place at Coimbatore. I do not want to frighten you with facts and figures. I do agree the buses and as a whole, the heavy vehicles play a great part in causing these accidents. These sorts of projects help the police to take more actions against the lawbreakers. I congratulate you on this sincere effort.
Next to Chennai city, Coimbatore registers the highest number of vehicles. An average of about 300 vehicles is registered per day in the two R.T.O offices. We take lots of measures to make the day an accident free day. You will all agree that “a life is precious”. We don’t want anyone to be maimed.
Your study reveals that more people are aware of the causes that cause accidents. Though they are aware of it they are the law breakers. I have my own experiences relating to it. Most of the people whom we come across violating the traffic are doctors, engineers, professors, lawyers in all categories. Not to mention about the students. Well, they are the ones who find every chance to violate the ‘No Entry’ area…. A couple of days back I came across a student of this college riding a motor cycle. He was talking on the mobile phone. So many times I used to wonder how people can balance their vehicle and also use a mobile phone while riding. He never had a valid insurance. He confessed to me that all his pocket money was getting melted by paying the fine. He comes from Tuticorin to study. I just wonder whether his parents are aware of it.
I had a chance to tour America. We were driving in Washington. Suddenly my brother-in- law who was on the wheel slowed down. There was a funeral procession going before us and we had to trail for another 3 miles. In America, you cannot overtake a funeral procession. Likewise you will be punished if you overtake a yellow bus…(school bus). Ambulances have the right of way and all the cars slow down and give way for the ambulance to pass through. Such a discipline is maintained. This discipline is taught to the children from their home, from their school and they carry it on as they become an adult. The law is very stringent. You can’t fool the police there.
Here in Coimbatore we are conducting regular classes for bus drivers, auto men .. We are also taking classes for the students and teachers of elementary schools. I have an appeal for the college authorities. I solicit the maximum co-operation. Please do not encourage the students who do not possess a valid license or insurance to park their vehicle inside the college premises. During the time of admission itself you should check their licenses. Inform their parents. We need to be very strict with their discipline.
Let no-one claim that the deaths are accidental. Transport is intrinsically risky. Let us decide how risky we want it to be and adjust things accordingly. We can decide our own destiny.
Most of the companies made it very compulsory for their employees to wear helmet while riding a two wheeler. Seat belts should be made compulsory. Being thrown from a moving vehicle is the number one cause of death in car crashes. Staying inside the vehicle is your best chance of survival. Safety belts are designed to keep you inside the vehicle, where there's room to live. Institutions should enforce the use of seat belts and helmets. Take every step to protect your fellow citizens. Your negligence should not be a cause for another one to lose their life or their dear ones. I solicit your co-operation in this. We care for you. Let us make every day an accident free day. OBEY TRAFFIC RULES!

Red, Yellow, and Green- Be Safe on Roads.

The increase in the number of vehicles poses a great challenge to the community. Cities and communities worldwide depend on properly functioning traffic lights to keep traffic moving on busy roads. While police men manually help in decreasing the traffic congestion, traffic lights and other traffic control systems also help to provide safe road conditions for a wide variety of travelers, including bicyclists and pedestrians. It is also vital to ensure that these traffic control systems are functioning correctly 24 hours a day. A traffic light or traffic signal is a signalling device positioned at a road intersection or pedestrian crossing to indicate when it is safe to drive, ride or walk, using a universal color code.
The history of the traffic signal ways back to the year 1868. The first traffic lights were installed outside the British House of Parliament on the 10th December 1868. They resembled the railway signals at that time, with semaphore arms and red and green gas lamps for night use. The modern electric traffic light is an American invention. In the year 1912 , Salt Lake City police men set up the first red-green signal lights. Initially it had two colors, red and green and a buzzer to provide a warning for color changes. The first three color traffic lights were introduced in New York in 1920. The first automatic traffic light was tested in England in the year 1927.
Traffic lights for normal vehicles or for pedestrians always have two main lights, a red light that means STOP and a green light that means GO. Usually, the red light contains some orange in its hue, and the green light contains some blue, to provide some support for people with red-green colour blindness. In most countries there is a yellow(amber) light which when on and not flashing means to STOP safely. Flashing amber means that a motorist may go ahead with care if the road is clear, giving way to pedestrians and to other road vehicles that may have priority.
In India the sequence is red (stop), green (go), yellow (prepare to stop) . In certain countries, the sequence includes red + amber together before green, which helps draw attention to the impending change to green, to allow drivers to prepare to move off.
The traffic lights are designed and mounted and positioned for desired visibility. Depending upon the location, traffic lights may be mounted on poles situated on street corners, hung from wires strung over the roadway, or even hung from horizontal poles or installed within large horizontal gantries that extend out from the corner and over the right-of-way. Shades and backpanels are also useful in areas where sunlight would diminish the contrast and visibility of a signal face. Traffic signals are located at the stop line on same side of the intersection as the approaching traffic and are often mounted overhead as well as on the right and left sides of the road. The stop line alignment is done to prevent crosswalk blocking and allow for better pedestrian traffic flow.
Two decades back the traffic lights were used using incandescent or halogen lamps. In the mid 1990s, cost-effective traffic light lamps using light emitting diodes (LEDs) were developed. Unlike the incandescent-based lamps, which use a single large bulb, the LED-based lamps consist of an array of LED elements, arranged in various patterns. When viewed from a distance, the array appears as a continuous light source
LED-based lamps have numerous advantages over incandescent lamps; among them are:
Much greater energy efficiency
Much longer lifetime between replacement, measured in years rather than months. Some of the longer lifetime is due to the fact that the light is an array which allows the light to be used even if some of the LED's in the array are dead.
Brighter illumination.
The ability to display multiple colours and patterns from the same lamp. Individual LED elements can be enabled or disabled, and different colour LEDs can be mixed in the same lamp.
Much faster switching.
Traffic signals must be co-ordinated in such a way that they have relationship with the nearby signals. The simplest control system uses a timer; each phase of the signal lasts for a specific duration before the next phase occurs; this pattern repeats itself regardless of traffic. Nowadays more sophesticated control systems use sensor loops buried in the pavement to detect to detect the presence of traffic waiting at the light, and thus can avoid giving the green light to an empty road while motorists on a different route are stopped. But the problem with sensor-based systems is that they may fail to detect vehicles such as motor cycles or bicyclesand they may have to wait for a long time till another vehicle arrived at that point. The sensor loop typically work in the same fashion as a metal detector.
It is also possible to alter and control the strategy of a traffic light based on the time of day and day of the week, or for other special circumstances (such as a major events like processions causing unusual demand at an intersection). Attempts are often made to place traffic signals on a coordinated system so that drivers encounter long strings of green lights. But this is not a safe practise as the drivers are tempted to be careless and negligent in driving.
Traffic lights are turned off late at night when traffic is very light. Under these circumstances, traffic in the main street may get a flashing amber to warn of an intersection.
There are special traffic lights that stops all vehicular traffics. Pedestrians just press the button that is placed in the signal pole and then they have exclusive access to the intersection and can cross the intersection. Road Traffic Accident – Prevention.

As we open up the newspaper, there’s always a common news item about various road traffic accidents. May it be pedestrian injury, bicycle or car mishap, it always has a mammoth influence on the common man. 20% of people die of traffic accidents and many are left maimed. A death always creates a vacuum in a family, whether due to disease or accident. Most people feel very insecure and always wonder whether they will return back home safely after their job. Leave alone the accidents that happen in the Highway. There are quite a number of accidents that happen at the signal points just because the drivers ignore the yellow light.
The road accidents are becoming increasingly common in the developing countries. Though the government takes ample care to install safety measures, and the police personnel put into action in accident-prone areas, the common man just ignores them. They lack patience and want to reach their destination early, but ultimately they land up at a different, difficult destination.
The W.H.O has taken an initiative to reduce the number of accidents. Is road safety a responsibility of the police, the transport department or the licensing authority? Road safety is everything put together from the government to the common man. One should realise that a life is precious. The health personnel especially should realize this and take all immediate steps to resuscitate patients involved in the accident. This is a challenge not only for the health personnel but also for the police personnel. They should rush to the spot immediately and work as a team. The traffic officers should be given training in First Aid as is done in the western countries. There is no need to be perplexed. They just have to understand the situation, little compassionate and take timely action.
Voluntary agencies should also take part in preventing RTA. These agencies should work together with the police and the health department. The agencies should give importance to the three ‘E’s of prevention. (i.e.) Education, Enforcement and Evoking awareness among the people. Training classes should be conducted to the drivers on a periodical basis. The licensing authority should be reasonably stringent in issuing licenses. Road safety should be taught from school level itself. Most of the roads are a great peril with pits and potholes and with sudden eruption of the so-called speed breakers. Mention should be made about the recent development of technology – the mobile phones. Police personnel should penalize people who use the mobile phone while driving. Young girls are the ones who fly in their two wheelers unmindful of the pattern of the dress they wear; they always land up in a tough situation. Legislation and its enforcement receive an appropriate and prominent place in our lives.
Common man needs to be disciplined about wearing helmet so that damaged skulls can be avoided. Each one of us has to take the responsibility and eventually the death rate will soar down.

In Coimbatore city alone, daily an average of 5 accidents take place. 14-15 fatal cases are reported every month. A few seconds of carelessness, can just ruin a valuable life.
